OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

Caravaggio arrived in Malta in 1607. His strong contrasts of light and darkness helped give painted scenes an unusually immediate, dramatic force.

Here’s the twist.

He became a knight in 1608, but a violent dispute led to imprisonment at Fort St Angelo. He escaped, and the Order subsequently expelled him.

Why it still matters.

His paintings remained. The Beheading of St John the Baptist and St Jerome Writing are preserved at St John’s Co-Cathedral.
