OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

Before the Baroque cathedral, Mdina had an older church with medieval fabric. Work on a new choir had already begun in 1679.

Here’s the twist.

The 1693 earthquake damaged the building. Reports also raised concerns about age and structural weakness, encouraging replacement.

Why it still matters.

That makes the lost building’s story more complicated than a single disaster. Change came through decisions as well as damage.
